How trust scores work

Our Trust Score is a number from 0 to 100 that distills player experiences with gaming sites. We started TrustPlay to help gamers buy and sell safer on 3rd party gaming sites. It's a review site made for and powered by gamers, and besides the reviews we also analyze site terms, fees and payout options ourselves.

Updated

Built from player reviews

Reviews on TrustPlay and on other review platforms, with every source listed on the site's profile.

Recent reviews weigh more

A review from a year ago counts about a seventh of one from this month, so the score shows how a site is doing now.

Every score is worked out again each night, with the day's new reviews in and older ones counting a little less.

How is the Trust Score calculated?

The Trust Score algorithm is built on reviews, from TrustPlay itself and other review platforms like Trustpilot and SmartCustomer. All reviews on TrustPlay require a verified Steam or Google account, and each player may only leave one review per site. As TrustPlay is still a young project, new sites initially rely on outside platforms for data. Once our users start reviewing a site, our native reviews start to count more, as we can verify those ourselves. All review sources are listed on every profile.

What else does TrustPlay check?

We're proud of our Trust Score, but it's only part of what TrustPlay has to offer. We also track site popularity, analyze each site's terms and policies with machine learning, and research the company behind it. If you need a specific payment method you can filter by it, and every profile lists the site's safety features.

Isn't it just an average?

No, the Trust Score weighs reviews differently to give you a current picture of how satisfied players are with a site. Newer reviews carry more weight. Reported reviews are checked by a person, and fake or gamed ones are removed to keep the platform clean and real. Every site starts at a neutral score of 70, and each review moves it a bit up or down. This means a brand new site won't score 98 with three 5-star reviews, and one angry first review can't sink a site either.

How do reviews on TrustPlay work?

Once you sign up with your Steam or Google account, you can review any site on our platform with a star rating and a description of your experience. Reviews go live right away and count toward the Trust Score. If another user flags your review, we check it manually against our review guidelines. Since site experiences can change over time, you can always edit or delete your review. And a site can't get a review taken down just because it's negative.

What is a good Trust Score?

This is how we'd describe each band.

Excellent90 to 100Players are really happy with this site.
Very good80 to 89Players are happy, with a few complaints here and there.
Good70 to 79Mostly good experiences, but take a look at recent reviews.
Fair60 to 69Experiences are mixed, so be careful.
PoorBelow 60A lot of players have had bad experiences.

If a site has no reviews anywhere, it won't have a score.

Can a site pay for a better score?

No. TrustPlay was founded to reduce scams in the industry by providing transparency, so Trust Scores are defined solely by user reviews and can't be improved by sites paying us. TrustPlay is free to use, forever, and built for users first. To monetize TrustPlay, you may come across links where we earn a commission or sponsored positions in lists, but everything is clearly labelled as such. Site facts, terms and popularity don't move the score either. You can read more in our disclaimer.

How often is the Trust Score updated?

Trust Scores are ever-changing. Just because a site was good last year doesn't mean it is today. All Trust Scores are recalculated daily to reflect changes in site satisfaction, whether that's new reviews coming in or older reviews losing weight. Every site has a Trust Score history chart, so you can see how its performance evolves over time.

Why isn't the exact formula public?

Our exact formula for calculating Trust Scores is kept to ourselves, but everything that goes into it is public, named, counted and linked. Buying fake reviews is a huge industry, so to avoid people gaming our system, we keep it hidden.

What if a score looks wrong?

If you run the site, tell us what you think is wrong and provide proof of your claim. If you're a player, contribute with your own experience by writing a review. This helps other gamers make the right decision moving forward. We recognize the Trust Score isn't perfect, but it's a tool that, together with your own research and common sense, can greatly reduce the risk of being scammed.
